BOSTON – Sports fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Boston Renegades when “Born to Play” airs on  ESPN. The documentary by Viridiana Lieberman spends a season with the Boston Renegades, a semi-professional women’s tackle football team on a path for redemption after going undefeated in the regular season and losing their championship the previous year.

The Renegades put their bodies on the line while maintaining full-time careers that support their lifelong dream to play football. “Born to Play” takes an intimate look at a group of powerful competitors who come together to commit everything they have to their sport for nothing more than the love of the game. The Renegades play in the Women’s Football Alliance, a national full-contact women’s football league that was founded in 2009.

The film airs on ESPN on Wednesday, July 1st in prime time at 8pm ET.

“Born to Play” marks Lieberman’s feature-length documentary directorial debut. She previously edited the award-winning documentaries I Am Evidence and The Sentence, as well as Love the Sinner, Call Center Blues, Special Olympics: 50 Years of Changing the Game and Stonewall:The Making of a Monument. In addition, Lieberman wrote the quintessential book on women’s sports depiction in film, Sports Heroines on Film: A Critical Study of Cinematic Women Athletes, Coaches and Owners.

The Renegades are coming off an undefeated season where they captured Boston’s fifth professional women’s football championship since 2010, and the team’s second in a row. Currently, the Renegades are meeting virtually in preparation of a formal announcement to return to play after the 2020 season was cancelled by the Women’s Football Alliance due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
