BOSTON — Five players from the Boston Renegades have been selected for the U.S. Women’s National Football Team in advance of the 2017 Women’s World Championship (WWC). This marks the third such international women’s tackle football tournament, with previous competitions in 2010 and 2013.
Renegades linebacker Vicky Eddy, offensive tackle Stephanie Jeffers, and tight end Emily Weinberg join the 45-player roster that will compete in the tournament. Additionally, wide receiver Adrienne Smith and offensive tackle Rese Woodfine are designated alternates. Tryouts were held in January in Orlando, Fla.
Eddy and Jeffers previously earned gold medals as members of the 2013 national team that swept the games in Vantaa, Finland. Smith competed in both previous world championships, winning two gold medals. In 2010, she scored the first points in the tournament’s history by catching a 52-yard touchdown pass. In 2013 she was named to the tournament’s all-star team.
Weinberg and Woodfine celebrate their first such selections. “[I am] so honored and excited to have been selected for the Women’s National Team,” exclaimed Weinberg. “I never imagined I would one day get to represent my country playing a sport I am so in love with.”
“Their passion, commitment, and skill level is influencing women’s football all over this country,” said Team USA Head Coach Jim Farrell. “This is truly a remarkable group.”
Organized by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), the 2017 WWC will take place near Vancouver, B.C., during the week of June 24 – June 30, 2017. The United States is the reigning back-to-back champion.
While the U.S. coaching staff has scheduled one team practice ahead of the tournament, regular-season play will serve as preparation for Boston’s Team USA players. The Renegades aim to contend for the national title after falling one game short of the league championship in 2016. Season tickets are on sale now.
