Deanna Walsh serves in the Army National Guard while also working as a chef. As a child, she dreamed of becoming an Olympic hockey player, and her drive and athleticism helped bring the Stoneham (Mass.) High School girls hockey team to their first ever state tournament.
While Deanna’s dreams of pursuing hockey fell beyond her reach during college, she changed course by joining the Massachusetts Army National Guard. She takes great pride in her military service; her teammates acknowledge that pride, bestowing her with the nickname “GI Jane”.
Walsh also took up football as a new sport in 2013 by joining the Boston Militia. Since then, she has become a starter on both defense and special teams, and aspires to become an “all-star player on and off the field.”
“Football has taught me a great deal of life lessons including overcoming adversity in numerous situations,” says Deanna. “The most important thing for me is how this team has become my family. I have 30+ amazing sisters that I know will always have my back.”
She takes inspiration from her oldest sister, Jen, who passed away in 2018. “She has taught me to love fiercely, and live free.”
