SOMERVILLE, Mass. — The Boston Renegades crushed the Cleveland Fusion, 47-18, Saturday night at Dilboy Stadium. With the win, the Renegades capped their season sweep of the Fusion and improved to 4-1 overall.
Allison Cahill #7 passed for six scores. Adrienne Smith #10 was the target of the night, hauling in four touchdown passes, while Kathryn Tylander #15 caught a pair. Sue Quimby #22 accounted for Boston’s lone rushing score.
Smith wasted no time in finding the end zone as she pulled in a short pass from Cahill and charged 43 yards to the house to put Boston on the board first at 7-0. The Renegades struck again on their next possession as Cahill found Tylander for a 5-yard touchdown to further Boston’s command to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.
The Cahill-Smith connection continued rolling through the Cleveland defense to open the second frame as the duo connected for a 29-yard touchdown on fourth down to give Boston a 20-0 advantage. The Fusion got on the board in the final two minutes of the frame, but the score remained in Boston’s favor at 20-6 after the end of the first half.
Quimby provided the lone score of the third quarter as she crossed the end zone from eight yards out to further the Renegade lead to 27-6.
Tylander notched her second touchdown reception of the night to open the final stanza by shaking a defender before sprinting to the end zone to haul in a pass from a scrambling Cahill. It was then 34-6 in favor of Boston.
Cleveland cut the Renegades’ lead to 34-12 midway through the fourth, but Smith responded with her third touchdown catch of the night on a play fans are calling the “tail-feather touchdown”. Smith nearly dropped the short pass and struggled to control the ball, trapping it behind her back even as she advanced down the field. Smith did regain control and scampered 27 yard to the end zone to put Boston ahead, 41-12.
With less than a minute left, the Fusion tacked on another score before Boston recovered the onside kick attempt. Cahill hit Smith for a 52-yard touchdown strike on the final play of the game as the Renegades won, 47-18.
The Renegades will return to the road to take on the Pittsburgh Passion May 14 at Cupples Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
