Running back Ruth Matta is one of Europe’s most decorated players. As a member of the Birmingham Lions of the British American Football Association (BAFA), Matta is twice an Offensive Player of the Year and also a six-time UK National Champion. With Great Britain’s national team, she is a European Silver Medalist, and she was awarded MVP at the 2017 IFAF Women’s World Championships in the Bronze medal match against Mexico.
A soccer player in secondary school, and a rugby player at university, it seems Matta was perhaps destined to play American football. Her outlook on the game certainly indicates she is up to the task. “When I walk onto the pitch I’m no longer defined by my gender but as a player. Focus shifts towards my athletic ability, hard work and fight.” Her desire to compete with the best brought her to the Boston Renegades in 2019. “Itโll take time to settle in. I will have to earn my reps in Boston,” she said in an interview with EP Sports. “The level I will be playing in the U.S. will be a lot higher.”
Matta rose to the challenge. She rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season. The strength of her performance in the 2019 Womenโs Football Alliance National Championship Game earned her the Most Valuable Player of the Game award.
