PITTSBURGH, PA — The Boston Renegades scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter to prime a 63-26 victory over the Pittsburgh Passion. Boston advances to the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) National Conference title game on July 14.
A grueling contest between the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the WFA was expected even if a heatwave hadn’t swept across region. Despite on-the-field temperatures that were near 90 degrees at kickoff, both teams moved at a quick pace on offense in the first frame. Boston drew first blood when Chanté Bonds #21 took a screen pass from Allison Cahill #7 32 yards for a score. Angela Baker of the Passion responded with a touchdown reception of her own from five yards out. Boston’s Bonds would score once again on a screen pass, this time from 35 yards out.
Pittsburgh evened the score at 14 in the second quarter when Baker pulled down another touchdown pass from quarterback Lisa Horton. Renegades running back Angelica Pascual #1 then scored three unanswered touchdowns before halftime to break the game open for Boston. Aided by a domineering performance from Boston’s offensive line, Renegades rushers ripped big runs of 54 yards (Pascual) and 43 yards (Cahill) on two scoring drives. Allie Genereux #52 recovered a fumbled kickoff return to help set up Pascual’s third touchdown of the quarter. Pascual finished the game with 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries.
At halftime, Boston lead 35-14. They recovered a fumble on Pittsburgh’s first play from scrimmage to open the third quarter and never looked back. Pascual and rookie Sarah Tully #31 would score touchdowns before the Passion found the end zone again, a 6-yard reception by Rachel Wojdowski, who lead Pittsburgh receivers with 117 yards. Passion Quarterback Lisa Horton compiled 225 passing yards with four touchdowns and was also her team’s leading rusher with 21 yards.
Receivers Emily Beinecke #87 and Kathryn Tylander #15 would add two more scores in the final frame before Sharon Vasquez wrapped up Pittsburgh’s scoring for the night with 21-yard touchdown reception. Beinecke turned in a prolific performance of 132 receiving yards on 11 catches. Renegades quarterback Allison Cahill amassed 282 passing yards with five touchdowns.
The Renegades will next face the D.C. Divas in Landover, Md., on July 14 in the WFA National Conference Championship Game. The winner of that game will advance to the WFA National Championship, the crowning achievement of women’s tackle football.
